Frequently asked questions about Fellowship

We’ve addressed some common myths and gathered together the most frequently asked questions about becoming a Fellow to help you set aside any concerns about the Fellowship application process.

What makes an IET Fellow (FIET)?

IET Fellows are professionals who have made notable achievements, insightful contributions or had a significant influence within the realm of engineering and technology, sustained at high-levels for a period of at least five years, usually within the last ten years.

Do I need to be a member to apply for Fellowship?

Fellowship is the highest grade of membership in the IET. It is open for anyone to apply whether or not they are an IET member.

Do I need to complete all nine criteria?

You should select two or three criteria that enable you to provide evidence of meeting the definition.

You strongly advise contacting an Adviser, how do I identify one?

You don't need to have a Fellow Adviser but we would strongly recommend this to help you throughout the process.

You can contact the Fellowship team at
fellowship@bleachenglishdubbed.com who will be able to put you in touch with a Fellow Adviser.

They are trained to support prospective Fellows in the application process, and they will help you present your evidence in the best way possible.

Can I send in my CV?

No, you will need to complete the Fellowship application form. To download the application form, visit the Become a Fellow web page.

What other information should I not send?

Presentations, lists of publications, courses and
conferences attended, or certificates awarded.

What if my role involves sensitive information?

If you cannot provide publicly available information due to
security or other sensitivity, then it must be corroborated by
your supporters.

Do I need to be Professionally Registered?

No, Fellowship is open to anyone who meets the definition.

Who is responsible for Supporter Forms?

Please ensure that you send a copy of the Supporter form to
each of your nominated supporters. When complete, each
supporter should send the form to fellowship@bleachenglishdubbed.com

Do my supporters need to be FIET?

Your two supporters must be people of recognised repute who know you professionally and can vouch for the evidence you provide. One should be an IET Fellow or a Fellow of any Professional Engineering Institution, as defined by the Engineering Council.

Can I become a Fellow if I’m self-employed, or even if I’m not in employment at all?

Yes, there is no need to be employed or employed by a company to apply for Fellowship.

Is age taken into account?

No, Fellowship has no age or other protected characteristics restrictions. We welcome anyone who meets the definition.

How much is the application fee?

The Fellow Application fee and membership fee for the year
can be found on our Fellowship fees web page.

How long does an application take to process?

Typically, the application process takes about 8 weeks. This
timescale is dependent upon the quality of the application,
whether there is a request for further evidence, or whether
there is an interview. Should an interview be requested then
the process may take about 12 weeks.

Why have I been asked for interview?

In some cases, you may be asked to attend an interview.
The aim of this is for you to discuss your application with the interviewers and so clarify some aspects of it. The interview panel will consist of two trained Fellow interviewers with experience and understanding of the field in which you work.

You will have the chance to discuss your experience in more
detail and will not be expected to provide a presentation.
Interviews can be carried out in Person or via videoconferencing platforms (e.g. Zoom) as circumstances allow.

They generally last 60-90 mins.

Why have I been asked for further information?

When assessing Fellow applications, there may be some
further evidence is required to assess the application or some information may not have been received, e.g. missing organisational chart. By asking for further evidence, the assessment panel is providing you with an opportunity to clarify particular details or to answer specific questions.

What happens next?

Upon receipt of your application, you will receive, via email, an acknowledgement. Under separate cover, another email will be sent containing a secure link for you to pay the Fellowship Assessment Fee.

What happens if I am not happy with the outcome of my application?

The IET has a standard Appeals process where you can
appeal the outcome of your Fellowship application. There
is an Appeal application fee, details of which can be found
on the Fellows fees web page.

Should your appeal be successful, your application fee
will be fully refunded to you. You can find out more about how to appeal the decision on our website.
